Leon Merle Fitzgerald, 80, of Winterset died Wednesday, March 11, 1998 in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 14, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Truro with the Rev. Richard Harbart officiating. Burial was at Fremont Cemetery in Clarke County.

Leon Fitzgerald was born Feb. 2, 1918, to John R. and Anne Maybelle Humes Fitzgerald at Sedgewick, Alberta, Canada. He attended country schools between Osceola and New Virginia. He married Dors Ellen Harris June 24, 1937, in Clarke County. He was a heavy equipment operator for Penn Dixie Corp. He had resided in Madison County since 1951.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Orville and Floyd; and two sisters, Ferne Schaffer and Elsie Fitzgerald.

He is survived by one son, Stan (wife Ann) of Ankeny; one daughter, Faye (husband Jim) Jones of Winterset; one sister, Isabelle Barber of West Des Moines; and six grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Kale Funeral Homes in Truro.

LEON M. FITZGERALD

Leon Merle Fitzgerald, the son of John R. and Anna Maybelle Humes Fitzgerald, was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Sedgewick, Alberta, Canada and died March 11, 1998, at his home in Winterset. He was 80.

Mr. Fitzgerald was educated in country schools between Osceola and New Virginia. He married Doris Ellen Harris on June 24, 1937, in Clarke County and they became the parents of two children.

Mr. Fitzgerald had lived in Madison County since 1951. He was a heavy equipment operator for Penn Dixie Corporation until he retired.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1987; two brothers, Orville Fitzgerald and Floyd Fitzgerald; a sister Elsie Fitzgerald in infancy and a sister Ferne Schaffer.

Mr. Fitzgerald is survived by a son, Stan Fitzgerald and his wife, Ann Fitzgerald, of Ankeny; a daughter, Faye Jones and her husband, Jim Jones, of Winterset; six grandchildren, Greg Jones and his wife, Deb Jones, of Earlham, Kevin Fitzgerald and his wife, Cari Fitzgerald and Kim Fitzgerald, all of Ankeny; Kurt Fitzgerald and his wife, Amy Fitzgerald, of Olathe, Kan., Melissa Kraft and her husband, Jim Berry and Doug Jones and his wife, Brenda Jones all of Winterset; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister. Isabelle Barber of West Des Moines; other relatives and many friends.

Services for Mr. Fitzgerald were at 10:30 a.m. March 14 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Truro, the Rev. Richard Harbart officiating. Organist Doris Johnson accompanied Larry Smith as he sang In the Garden and Beyond the Sunset.

Casket bearers were Chris Brittain, Kevin Fitzgerald, Bill Barber, Jim Berry, Kurt Fitzgerald and Dan Barber. Honorary bearers were Greg Jones, Timothy Kraft and Doug Jones. Interment was in the Fremont Cemetery in Clarke County. Arrangements were by Kale Funeral Home in Truro.
