Velma Bass - Winterset

Velma Loraine Bass, 90, of Winterset died July 19, 2005, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

A Funeral Mass was held Thursday July 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with Father Chris Hartshorn officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Velma Bass was born Feb. 22, 1915, in Winterset to Loyd and Lillian Fern (Willcox) Fleming. She was a 1932 graduate of Winterset High School. On July 3, 1940, she married Gene Bass in Winterset. A lifetime resident of Madison County, Velma had been a rural school teacher. She also was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John Fleming, and a sister, Pauline Bussanmas.

She is survived by her husband, Gene, of Winterset; two daughters, Linda Hupton of Des Moines, and Mary Jo Baitinger of Albion; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
