MRS. JAMES BERTHOLF Passed Sunday at the Age of 96 years

In the death of Mrs. James Bertholf of Lincoln township Sunday, Madison county lost another of its pioneer citizens. Mrs. Betholf died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Brownell, on her ninety-sixth birthday.

As Harriet Rachel Murphy, Mrs. Bertholf was born Oct. 1, 1843, near Gallatin, Mo. When was was 16 years old she came with her parents to Iowa. They lived at Mt Ayr and Afton, later moving to Macksburg, and then to Lincoln township. There she was married to James Bertholf on March 1, 1866.

At the age of 16, Mrs. Bertholf united with the Baptist church at Mt. Ayr and adhered to that faith during her entire life.

Mrs. Bertholf's first home in Lincoln township was a log cabin, which her family built upon settling there. In 1873, a pretentious farm home was constructed which had been her residence since that time.

Mrs. Bertholf was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Ada Thrift, and her only son, Nelson Bertholf, who was a prominent Winterset banker. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Armina Brownell; two grandaughters, Mrs. Harriett Rinehart of Lincoln township and Jane Bertholf of Long Beach, Cal.

Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. L. F. Davis of Winterset. Burial was made in the Winterset Cemetery.

MRS. J. BERTHOLF SUCCUMBS AT 96

Was Resident of Madison Co. For More than 75 Years. Funeral Tues.

Madison county lost another of its well known and respected citizens when Mrs. James Bertholf died at her home Sunday, Oct. 1, in Lincoln township. Mrs. Bertholf, who was 96 years of age, died on the date of her birth. She had been in ill health for quite some time and had made her home for the past few years with her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Fred B. Brownell.

Harriet Rachel Murphy, was born near Gaalaton, Mo., in 1843, and with her parents and family came to Iowa when a girl the 16 years old. She lived at Mount Ayr and Afton for awhile, later moving to Macksburg and then to Lincoln township, where she was married to James Bertholf March 1, 1866.

She was converted at the age of 16, while living at Mount Ayr, uniting with the Baptist church and adhered to that faith during her entire life. For many years her joy was in sewing for the orphans in the home at Council Bluffs, Iowa, where each year she made numerous articles and garments for the children of that home.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Armina Brownell; two granddaughters, Mrs. Harriet Rinehart of Lincoln township, and Jane Bertholf of Long Beach, California; a daughter-in-law and two son-in-law’s. Her husband, James Bertholf; one daughter, Mrs. Ada Thrift, and her only son, Nelson Bertholf all preceded her in death.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at 10:30 by the Rev. L. F. Davis. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
