Dwayne Chickering, Malvern

Harry Dwayne Chickering, 63, of Malvern died Oct. 8, 2004, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs from complications of a heart attack.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Malvern United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Kim officiating. Burial was at Malvern Cemetery.

Dwayne Chickering was born Dec. 28, 1940 in Madison County to Harry Clayton and Doris Lorene (Eyery) Chickering. He attended school in Macksburg, graduating in 1959. On Oct. 17, 1964, he was united in marriage to Sharon Kay Fitzgerald at the Congregational Christian Church in Truro. They made their first home in Slater where Dwayne worked for the Graham Telephone Service. They then moved to Truro where he became a maintenance worker for the John Deere Manufacturing plant in Ankeny. Dwayne served the Truro community by operating the city water treatment plant, snow removal, street maintenance and reading water meters. He also served as fire chief of the Truro Volunteer Fire Department. He later took a job as an iron worker in Des Moines. In 1968, he began work for the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America as a maintenance worker in their Truro plant. In 1978, the family moved to Malvern when Dwayne was promoted to assistant foreman and transferred to the Hastings, Iowa, pumping station. In 1996, he retired from the gas company. He was a member of the Malvern United Methodist Church and a 15-year member of the Malvern Volunteer Fire Department where he served as captain for a portion of those years. He also volunteered in many community events.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Ray Schultz; and a stepsister, Maxine Purkapile.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Malvern; two sons, Todd D. Chickering of Malvern and Clay Chickering of Council Bluffs; one daugher, Carrie Deel of Castle Rock, Colo.; a brother, Marvin Chickering of Algona; a sister, Marilyn Hughes of Macksburg; and four grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home in Malvern
