Lieut. Ross Chickering Dies in Airplane Crash in England

First Lieut. Ross Chickering of the Army Transport command was killed May 6, at Gibbetts Hill, Hazelmere, England, when the transport plan of which he was first pilot crashed into a radar station. The word came in a telegram received last Thursday by his wife, Mrs. Helen Chickering.

The plane in which Lieutenant Chickering met his death was named "Sherry", in honor of his small daughter here. A letter written by him prior to the crash revealed he had just been released from a hospital in France the morning of May 6, after a short illness with influenza.

Lieut. Chickering enlisted in the Army Air Forces on August 15, 1942, and was called to duty in February, 1943 His training was taken in Texas, where he received his wins and commission. He served a long tour of duty as a transport pilot based in Pop Field, N.C., and received his promotion to a first lieutenancy there. He went overseas in March of this year.

The young flyer was a native of Montgomery county, where he was born Aug. 23, 1917, the son of Mr. and Mr. H.J. Chickering. The family came to this community in 1931, and Winterset had since been his home. Prior to entering service he worked three years at the Swift and company station here.

He was married Sept. 28, 1941, to Miss Helen Roberts of Winterset. They were the parents of a daughter, Sherry Kathryn, and a son, Chester Ross.

In addition to the wife and children, he leaves his father, H.J. Chickering of Winterset; four sisters, Rose Marie Chickering of Miami, Fla., Betty Jean Chickering of Des Moines, Mrs. Darlene Glascock of Goshen, Ind., and Mrs. Janice Comp of Winterset; and two brothers, Wayne Chickering of Winterset, and James of Villisca.

MEMORIAL RITES HELD FOR ROSS CHICKERING

A last tribute was paid Sunday to the memory of First Lieut. Ross Chickering of Winterset when memorial services were held for that flyer at the First Methodist church in Winterset.

Lieutenant Chickering was a pilot in the army transport command, and was killed in line of duty May 6 in England when his plane crashed during a landing at an airport there.

The services were held here in charge of the Rev. Walter A. Samp pastor of the church. Members of the local post of the American Legion also participated with their ritual. Also taking part in the service were Charles Tucker, S2/c of the U.S. Navy, and Sgt. Russell Comp of the U. S. Army, St. Sgt. James M. Moorehead and Sgt. John H. Comp were present.
