LIGHTNING IS FATAL

H. E. Gamble of Douglas Township, Killed While Seeking Shelter Under Shock of Grain

H. E. Gamble, a well to do farmer, residing two miles due north of Winterset, was instantly killed by lightning during the thunder storm that visited this vicinity on Monday afternoon. Mr. Gamble and his son, Rupert, aged fifteen, were at work in the field when the storm came on. The appearance of the clouds did not indicate a heavy rain, so the farmer and son sought shelter under separate shocks of grain. A severe bolt of lightning alarmed the son, who went at once to the shock of grain in which his father had sought shelter, where his worst fears were confirmed. The bolt struck about the head and followed the length of the body, burning several holes in the clothing.

Mr. Gamble was a highly respected citizen and his untimely death claims the deepest sympathy for the bereaved family. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o’clock, and burial in the Winterset cemetery.
