Father Shupe was born on September 15, 1824, in Westmoreland County, Pa., and at the time of his death he was 66 years 4 months old. He was joined in matrimony to Miss Mary Ansley, Dec. 7, 1818 who survives him, they came west in 1850 and located in Madison county, where they continued to make their home until death came to sever the union only until the union in that happy eternal home in heaven.

Father Shupe was a soldier in the late war, he having served Co. A. 39 Iowa Reg. Sickness overtook him while in the service, the effects of which never left him. As the funeral procession passed through Winterset to the cemetery a number of soldiers his comrades in war formed in line two abreast and marched to the cemetery. Took charge of the coffin and lowered it to its resting place. As the departed was loyal to his country so also was he loyal to his God. He was converted in Winterset in 1857 and joined the M. E. church after they moved farther away from town he joined the Protestant Methodist church. He lived a godly life and he heard of the revival in the neighborhood he wanted to attend it but could not. He repeatly said "Bless the Lord, I have been praying for it and I am so glad that they are being converted." He was an honest and upright citizen, a kind husband and tender, affectionate father.

The funeral sermon was preached from Rev. __ chapter, 13 verse, "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord &e." His wife and three daughters and other relatives are left to mourn their loss which is his gain.

The following selections by the family were read at the funeral services by the writer.

God has called our father,
To the land where all is bliss.
From this world of Pain and sorrow,
Into perfect happiness.

Oh our hearts feel so lonely,
Now we see his face no more.
But we know his gentle spirit,
Has passed to the Golden Shore.

God is love we do not doubt it,
He has taken but his own.
And will keep him waiting for us,
Till we all are gathered home.
