Mary E. Baur, 77, of rural Winterset, died at Iowa Methodist Medical Center Hospital in Des Moines Saturday, June 28, 1986.
She was born near Patterson in 1908, the daughter of Peter and Marcella Monaghan Cunningham, a pioneer Iowa family. In 1915 the family moved west of Winterset.
Mary was graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Des Moines then attended St. Mary's College at South Bend, Ind. She was graduated from Iowa State University at Ames. She attended graduate school in Detroit, Mich. and was employed in the child psychology department of the Merrill Palmer Institute.
In 1933 she married Merritt C. Baur of Jefferson Township. They resided in the original Baur family homestead until 1966 when they purchased the Cunningham home near Winterset. They were the parents of three sons, John of Des Moines, Dennis of Winterset and Richard who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband Merritt; son John and his children, Judy and Steven of Des Moines; son Dennis and his children, Terri of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and James of Des Moines. Also surviving are her brothers, John and Peter Cunningham of Winterset and her sisters, Dorothy Vance and Catherine Carraher of La Grange, Ill. A sister, Sally Ryan preceded her in death.
She was active in community affairs; a founder of Progressive Study Club and a member of the Madison County Historical Society. She was also active in several social clubs and the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She was a life-time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she activated the Third Order of St. Francis. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.
A memorial mass was celebrated by Father Maurice Schulte at St. Joseph's Church Monday morning, June 30. The body was donated to Creighton University Medical School.
