Virgil E. Smith, 91, died November 13, 1993 at Bethesda Care Center in Winterset. Funeral services were held today, Wed. Nov. 17, 1993 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Frank officiating. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.
He was born October 2, 1902 in Elkhart to Jacob A. and Sarah E. (Goughnour) Smith. He married Laurine Florence Peterson on November 24, 1937 in Topeka, Kansas. He was a self-employed oil jobber living in Winterset since 1939. He was a member of the first United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Lions's Club; I.O.O.F.; Masonic Lodge; Madison County Historical Society; Petroleum Marketeers of Iowa; served as State Representative in Iowa for two terms. He was the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year for 1990.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers; and one sister.
Surviving relatives include several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church.
