Tractor Upset Kills Farmer, Billy Shearer

Madison County recorded its fourth highway-related fatality of the year last Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1977, with the death of Billy Claude Shearer on a gravel road in Section 34 of Scott township.

The accident occurred in front of the Bill See residence when Shearer attempted to turn east while driving a 706 Internation tractor northbound. The machine had a large rolled bale of hay off the rear hitch and slid into the north ditch rolling over and crushing Shearer.

The investigation at the scene was made by Madison County Sheriff Rex Rouse, deputies Welch and Harman and State Trooper Randal Zeutenhorst. Shearer was Rouse's brother-in-law.

Billy C. Shearer was born July 17, 1928, in Peru, Iowa, the son of Claude N. and Berdella Emerson Shearer. He was a lifetime resident of this county, a farmer and affiliated with the Methodist Church. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Iowa Cattlemen's Association.

Shearer's marriage to Marlene Burnett took place December 14, 1947, in Osceola. She survives her husband.

Also surviving is a son, Gary of Peru; his mother, Berdella Emerson Shearer; a grandaughter; two brothers, Dale of Worland, Wyo., Don of Omaha, Nebr. and two sisters, Berniece Miller of Modesto, Calif. and Josephine Rouse of Winterset. He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services for Billy Shearer were conducted Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2:30 p.m. from Collins Funeral Home. Rev. David Wagner officiating.

Burial was made at the Peru Cemetery with Masonic services.
