CHARLES HANDEL DIED HERE SUNDAY

Retired Winterset Business Man Was 74 Years of Age

Charles E. Handel, retired Winterset business man, died at the Memorial hospital in Winterset Sunday, May 3. He was 74 years of age, and had been in failing health for several months.

Mr. Handel had lived 53 years in this county. He was born at Owaneco, Ill., on Nov. 2, 1878, a son of John C. and Mary A. Handel. He came to Iowa in early life and was married at Indianola June 15, 1910, to Jennie L. Newerf. Her death occurred last Nov. 2.

He came to this county to farm in Union township. Later he was employed by the old Hawkeye Telephone Company of Winterset, and later with the Northwestern Bell company here. In 1924, he became associated with the old Munson Manufacturing company of Winterset, continuing his connection with that firm and its successors, the Wedg-Lock and Grip-Tite companies, until Jan. 1 of this year when he announced his retirement.

His affiliation was with the First Baptist church of Winterset and he was a member of the Masonic order.

Surviving are a son, Ralph E. Handel of Mt. Vernon, Ill.; a daughter, Mrs. Carl J. Bek of St. Charles; four granchildren; two brothers, Joseph L. Handel of Winterset and James E. Handel of East St. Louis, Ill.

Funeral services were held this Wednesday from the Anderson home for funerals, conducted by the Rev. Walter Cecil, pastor of the First Baptist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Pall bearers were W. C. Johnson, Dwight Johnson, Mont Johnson, Clarence Johnson, Orloff Lull and Vern Ritter.
