Ernest Ralph Tompkins, believed to be Madison county's oldest resident, died Sunday, Aug. 9, at Bethesda Care Center in Winterset at the age of 103 years, six months and 16 days.
Born in Van Buren county on Jan. 21, 1878, he was the son of Frank Tompkins and Mary McGill.
On Jan. 31, 1900, he married Hattie Haney in Red Oak, Iowa. Ernie and Hattie were married for 62 years until she passed away in 1962.
He was a farmer and also managed the Farmers Co-op in Winterset for 24 years.
Ernie was a lifetime resident of Madison county. He was a member of the Methodist Church since 1921, and also belonged to the Golden Agers and 60 Plus Clubs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two daughters; three brothers; four sisters; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Edward of Key West, Fla.; and Vernon of Sun City, Arizona; and two daughers, Iva Giddings of Fort Jones, California and Mabel Klaaren of Escondido, California.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 11 at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Rev. Byron Ayers and Dr. Paul Hann officiating.
Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.
