VINA HARTSOOK Dies at Spencer

Word was received here last Wednesday of the death of a long time resident of Winterset, Mrs. Fred P. Hartsook, who moved to Spencer, in 1955. She died on her 95th birthday, Wednesday, July 7th, 1971. Mrs. Hartsook, had been in failing health for several years, but her final illness was of short duration, and she died at the St. Luke's Lutheran home, where she had been living the past three years.

Lavina (Vina) Rebecca Foresman was born in Douglas township, July 7, 1876, a daughter of James and Mary Travis Foresman. She was graduated from the Winterset high school in 1895, and attended Northwestern University at Evanston, Illinois. She taught school in the Winterset schools for several years and was married, June 12, 1900 to Frederick P. Hartsook, who for many years owned an implement store in Winterset.

They were the parents of one daughter, Helen, now Mrs. Karl R. Tuttle of Spencer, who surives her. She also leaves two grandsons, F. Morris Tuttle of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Robert F. Tuttle of Bloomington, Minnesota and four great grandchildren, Mark and Caroline Tuttle of Lincoln, and Lisa and Lesley Tuttle of Bloomington.

Mrs. Hartsook spent her entire married life in Winterset, with the exception of one year in Lincoln township and was very active in Community affairs. She joined the Presbyterian church in Winterset, in 1906, and was a Sunday schol teacher for many years, and served ten years as an officer of the Des Moines Presbyterial.

She was elected treasurer of Madison County Historical Society in 1934, and later became president, and custodian of the rooms in the Court House, marking many items that has been presented to the Society.

She was also active in the Republican party, and was on the State committee and attended a National convention of the party as a delegate. She joined the AG chapter of P.E.O. in 1906 and was a charter member of Fortnightly club.

Mr. Hartsook died in 1953, and she moved to Spencer two years later, to be near her daughter, Mrs. Tuttle, and transferred by letter to the First Congregational church there.

Funeral services were held at the Spencer Congregational Church Friday afternoon, July 9th, and burial was made in the cemetery there.
