PAUL WHITE, Newsman For Over 40 Years, Dies Sunday at home.

Funeral services for Paul J. White, long-time news editor of the Winterset Madisonian, were held at 11 a.m. this Wednesday, March 22nd, from St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset.

Mr. White died at his home in Winterset Sunday evening, March 19, 1978, following a brief illness. He was 72 years of age.

Paul White was born July 7, 1905 in Winterset, the son of John P. and Bessie Young White. He moved with his parents to Mercedes, Tex., in 1919, and lived there until 1922. The family returned to Winterset in 1922. He graduated from Winterset High school with the class of 1924.

As a young man he worked as a grocery clerk in the old Danforth and Toson groceries in Winterset for two years. In the fall of 1926, he entered the University of Iowa at Iowa City. He graduated from the University with the class of 1931, receiving a B.A. degree with a certificate in Journalism.

He was employed as city editor of the Creston Daily News-Advertiser for a year, and spent six months as a copy reader on the Des Moines Register, before coming to the Winterset Madisonian as reporter and news editor in October of 1932. He was employed in that capacity for 41 years, until his retirement in November of 1973.

Mr. White was married Sept. 28, 1936, at Assumption Church, Churchville, to Marie C. Gillespie of Crawford township.

Mr. White was a member of the board of directors of the Winterset Chamber of Commerce for a number of years, serving as secretary of the Chamber for three years. He was a former member of the Winterset Lions club.

He was a long-time member of St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, serving as an usher there for 25 years. He was a member of the Pope John XXIII fraternity of the Third Order of St. Francis, and was minister perfect of that chapter for three years.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two children; John Paul White of Palm Desert, Calif., and Mrs. Robert (Sherryll) Grandgenett of Britt, Iowa. He also leaves five grandchildren; a brother, W. S. (Jack) White of Hollywood, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. M. L. (Margaret) Percy of Casa Grande, Arizona.

Officiating at the funeral mass Wednesday morning was Rev. Fr. Eugene Cunningham. A Rosary service for Mr. White was held Tuesday evening at Collins Funeral Home. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.
