Prominent Retired Farmer Dies August 1 at 85 Years
Funeral services for Gaylord Edwards, prominent retired farmer, of Winterset, will be held Thursday, Aug. 4 at 2:30 p.m. from the Richards Funeral Home here.
Mr. Edwards died Aug. 1 at the Madison County Memorial hospital, where he had been a patient for about two years. He was 85 years of age.
The eldest son of William H. and Elizabeth Gibson Edwards, he was born near Knoxville in Marion county, Iowa, on July 23, 1870.
When Mr. Edwards was quite young, his parents moved to a farm near the old community of Kasson, where he received his education in the rural school. He then attended Afton high school and later took a business course at Lincoln, Nebr.
He was united in marriage to Maude Heaton of Bureau, county, Illinois, on December 18, 1901. They made their home near Sheffield, Ill. where they operated his grandmother's farm.
In 1909, they moved to their farm in Scott township of Madison county, where they continued to live until Mr. Edwards' failing health made it necessary for them to move to Winterset in the fall of 1934.
While on the farm, Mr. Edwards attended and helped support the Zion Federated church, and was active in other community activities. He was well known for his interest in good farming practices.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Edwards; four brothers and one sister; one son, William, who died in the service of his country in 1945; and one grandson.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Florence Thomas of Palo Alto, Calif., Marian Miller of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Eleanor Stegeman of San Mateo, Calif.; one son, Irvin, who operates the home farm in Scott township; a sister, Mrs. Linnie Kitchell of Winterset; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Officiating at the final rites this Thursday afternoon will be th Rev. W. W. Steinmetz, pastor of the local Methodist church. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
