August 14, 2002Helene Niblo Alexander
Helene Niblo Alexander died peacefully at her home on the farm Thursday morning, August 8, 2002. Her ambition was to live to 100, and she was just four months and 23 days shy of reaching that landmark.
Helene worked the farm all her life, and was still mowing her yard at age 98. She was passionate about keeping her family histories, letter writing, gardening and, of course, farming.
A 1921 graduate of Winterset High School, she married Alvin Alexander that same year, and in 1929, they moved to the farm where they both lived for their remaining lives.
One of the most important things to Helene, and her grandchildren, was to be able to stay on her farm until she died. Janice and LaVere Cook and Middle River Hospice made that wish possible.
She is survived by six grandchildren, Greg Alexander and Dan Alexander, both of Winterset; Jeff Alexander and Jill Alexander, both of Minnesota; David Alexander of Colorado; and Julie Alexander Breda of Macksburg; eight great-grandchildren, Sasha, Nathan, Hillary, Adam, Natalie, Sarah, Jared and Jonathon; and her daughter-in-law, Margie Algreen Alexander of Winterset. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Alexander; her son Myles Walker Alexander; a granddaughter, Stacey "Buffy" Alexander; and her only sibling, Dale Niblo.
A private family service was held at Collins Oak Park Chapel on August 11th, followed by a reception for family and friends. Her cremains are at the Winterset Cemetery and under the Linden Tree at her farm. Memorial contributions may be made to Middle River Hospice.
