Stricken With Fatal Heart Attack Here This Monday
Fred Holmes of Winterset died following a heart attack here this Monday, March 19. He was 76 years of age. He had been in delicate health for several years with a heart condition, and he was stricken with the fatal attack while downtown Monday afternoon.
Mr. Holmes had lived on the same farm in Scott township for 70 years, but retired in 1956 and moved to Winterset. He was born near Winterset May 5, 1885, a son of Michael B. and Alice Harford Holmes.
He was married Sept. Sept 6, 1911 at Indianola, to Agnes E. Picken, who survives him.
He attended the Zion Federated church near Winterset.
In addition to his wife, he leaves three daughters, Mrs. Eugene Drake of Winterset, Mrs. Rex Emerson of Atlantic, and Mrs. William Gray of Anaheim, Calif.; two sons, Herbert Holmes of Dallas, Tex., and Michael Holmes of Winterset; eight grandchildren, one great grandchild; two brothers, S. B. Holmes and M. B. Holmes of Portland, Ore.; and a sister, Mrs. Essie Worley of Winterset.
One son, Eugene Holmes, was killed during World War II when the military airplane he was piloting crashed. He was serving as a lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force at the time.
Funeral services were to be held at 2 p.m. this Wednesday from the Collins funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Robert A. Owens, pastor of the First Christian church of Winterset. Burial was to be made in the Winterset cemetery.
