J. W. Miller, Winterset, son of Judge W. E. and Mary R. Miller; born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, in 1851; in 1852 his parents removed to Iowa City, where he was raised and received his education; in 1871 he came to Des Moines and was employed in the lumber business, and after a residence of ten years came to Winterset and engaged in the same business, which he continued until January 1, 1877, when he connected himself with the Winterset Madisonian as one of its editors; in November, 1876, he was united in marriage with Miss Laura J. Cummings; she was born in Winterset.
