Robert "Bob" Grotewold

February 15, 1932 - February 22, 2017

Larchwood, Iowa - Robert Grotewold, age 85 of Larchwood, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday February 27, 2017 at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids with Rev. Mark Hansen officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Lester, IA.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Larchwood, IA.

Robert Francis Grotewold was born February 15, 1932 in Lyon County, Iowa, the son of Harry and Alma (Rorem) Grotewold. He grew up on a farm near the tri-state marker by Larchwood, IA and attended country school there.

Bob later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the 175th National Air Guard. He served during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged he returned to the Larchwood area and farmed west of there.

On March 18, 1955, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Moser at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Lester, IA. The couple farmed near Lester for many years and to this union four children were born Edna, David, Robert and Darryl.

After eighteen years of marriage, Evelyn passed away on December 12, 1973 and two years later Bob married Bonnie Snyders on January 18, 1975 at the English Lutheran Church in Larchwood, IA. They continued to farm near Lester and later retired in 1990. In 2001 they moved off the farm and into Larchwood where they have lived to this day. Throughout his life, Bob was a member of the English Lutheran Church in Larchwood and the Flessner American Legion Post 561.

In his younger years, he enjoyed playing baseball and softball in Larchwood and Lester. Bob also loved playing snooker and played on a league for many years. But he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Bonnie Snyders of Larchwood, IA; four children: Edna (Calvin) Kellenberger of Lester, IA, David (Tammy) Grotewold of Canton, SD, Robert “Spud” (Mary) Grotewold of Larchwood, IA and Darryl “Shorty” (Linda) Grotewold of Brandon, SD; ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; brother, Gary (Marilyn) Grotewold of Larchwood, IA; sister, Betty Kramer of Rock Rapids, IA; many nieces, nephews and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Alma Grotewold; first wife Evelyn Grotewold; infant son, Raymond Grotewold; twin grandchildren, Kevin and Katie Grotewold and brother-in-law, Marvin Kramer.
