January 5, 1930 - August 19, 2016

Rock Rapids, Iowa -- Norman W. Kitchenmaster, age 86 of Rock Rapids, died on Friday, August 19, 2016 at the Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, with Reverend Mark Hansen officiating.

Following lunch, burial will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Steen, MN, with military honors by Van Anne – Fields VFW Post No. 6960 and Rex Strait American Legion Post No. 103.

Visitation will be Monday, August 22nd from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

Norman William Kitchenmaster was born January 5, 1930 at his parents’ home in Allison Township, Lyon County, Iowa, the son of John and Emma (Lauck) Kitchenmaster. He attended country school and helped with the family farm. He entered the U.S. Army in 1951. He served in the Korean War as an Artillery Sgt 1st Class, Chief of Sections – Gunnar. He received his honorable discharge and returned home in 1953 and continued to farm.

Norman was united in marriage to Margaret Blau on May 14, 1957 at Zion Presbyterian Church in George, IA. They made their home by Steen, MN on a farm which was around the corner from the Kitchenmaster home place. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, and Rex Strait Post No. 103, American Legion of Rock Rapids.

He enjoyed working with cattle, going to the sale barns, and drives through the country. Norm also enjoyed attending annual reunions with army buddies, watching the Minnesota Twins on TV, playing cards, and attending local softball games. He loved and enjoyed being with his daughters.

In April of 2008 Norman’s wife Margaret died after 51 years of marriage. Norman remained living on the farm. When Norman retired from farming he started working for Marv Flier helping with Spring planting and Fall harvesting. After 15 years of helping, he decided to come to an end with his farming days. Norman then moved to Rock Rapids in November 2009.

He is survived by his two daughters, Beverly Kitchenmaster of Sioux Falls, SD and Marsha Kitchenmaster of Rock Rapids, IA; three sisters, Florence Kitchenmaster of Rock Rapids, IA, Nora Ranschau of Rock Rapids, IA and Doris (Pete) Stegenga of Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.

Norman is preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma (Lauck) Kitchenmaster; wife, Margaret Kitchenmaster, brother, Louie Kitchenmaster; sisters, Ella Weber and Edna Kitchenmaster.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred: to the Peace Lutheran Church or charity of your choice.
