Joan Marie Wiering was born September 30, 1937 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to John and Veronica (Boeding) O’Hora and grew up in Hartford, SD. She graduated from Cathedral High School in Sioux Falls. On August 10, 1957 she was united in marriage to James Wiering at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Sioux Falls, SD. To this union four children were born. She and Jim farmed near Larchwood for 39 years. Joan had a very strong work ethic and was always Jim’s right hand “man.” She will be remembered as a wonderful cook and baker. She had an extensive recipe book collection and her family was treated to many delicious meals and desserts over the years. The Christmas season was extra special to Joan and she always had the house and Christmas trees decorated beautifully. Cookie and candy making, especially pecan nut roll and caramels, were her specialty and she generously shared with family and friends. Joan loved the music of Daniel O’Donnell and they were able to see him in concert several times.

She and Jim enjoyed dancing with the Shirts and Skirts square dancing group for many years. Joan and Jim also enjoyed taking trips over the years, especially to Disney World and the Alaskan cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary. But mostly, Joan loved her family. She loved family gatherings, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, and following the Minnesota Twins, when they were winning. Her family will remember her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Jim Wiering of Larchwood; daughters, Tami (Joe) Darst of Sioux Falls, SD, Miki (Kevin) Snyders of Larchwood, IA, and Sandra (Randy) Welbig of Colton, SD; son, Douglas (Tracey) Wiering of Cedar Falls, IA; 7 grandchildren, Erin (Kelly) Harrer and their children, Zachary and Kaeden all of Lisbon, IA; Andrea (Dustin) Reutter and their children Corben, Hailey and Aubrey all of Marion, SD; Dustin (Lisa) Snyders of Chandler, AZ and their son, Tyson; Abby and Brady Welbig of Colton, SD; and Henry and Charles Wiering of Cedar Falls, IA; sisters, Joyce Olson of Omaha, NE and Jean (Don) Mischel of Barstow, CA; brother, Jim (Vicki Sportelli) O’Hora of Sioux Falls, SD; nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Veronica O’Hora.
