Biography--

Carl Liechty age 84 of Sibley, Iowa, died Saturday June 11, 2016 at Country View Manor Home in Sibley.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 16, 2016 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Sibley, Iowa, with Fr. Siby Punnoose and Fr. Tom Flanagan concelebrating.

Burial will follow at St. Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery in Sibley.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 15th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley. There will be a Rosary at 5:30 p.m. and prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carl Edward Liechty was born April 4, 1932, in Sioux City Iowa, the son of Carl E. and Bertha Liechty. In his younger years he lived in Ashton Iowa, where his father operated a grocery store. Carl graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1950. During the Korean War, Carl served in the U. S Navy from 1951-1954 as a 2nd Class Petty Officer aboard the U.S.S. Frontier.

On January 4th, 1954 Carl married Donna Flanagan at Holy Name Catholic Church at Rock Rapids Iowa. After living in Long Beach, California for a short time following their marriage, Carl and Donna returned to Rock Rapids and later moved to Sibley in 1957. There they owned and operated Liechty Radio and TV for over thirty years. In 1988 they moved to Houston, where Carl was employed by Bendix Field Engineering Co. at the Johnson Space Center. Later in 1991, they returned to their home in Sibley and settled into retirement.

Carl was a member of the George E. Mudge American Legion Post. He served on the Sibley Community School Board from 1973-1983. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and past member, and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Ashton Iowa.

Carl enjoyed many hobbies. Among them being a long time Amateur Radio Operator. He was an avid reader and liked traveling, hunting, boating and spending time with his family and friends. During his retirement years Carl continued with his love for electronics and was pleased to repair televisions and radios for his old customers.

Survivors include two daughters, Carole and her husband Doug Hensch of Sibley IA, Patty and her husband Dan Huisenga of Ames IA, five sons; Bob and his wife Deb of Marion IA, Ron and his wife Kristi of Cypress TX, John and his wife Christine of Houston TX, Jim and his wife Holly of Houston TX and Tom and his wife Linda of League City TX. Carl is also survived by his eighteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren and his sister-in-law Mariel Krier of Larchwood IA.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife Donna Liechty, his parents, one sister and brother-in-law Diane and Gene Skidmore and one brother in infancy.
