Dorothy was born in Hull, Iowa, on November 8, 1928 to Dewey and Leone Jennings. She attended high school in her hometown, George, Iowa, where she was a star basketball player. She started her music career singing in a small group and playing the piano and organ for her church. Dorothy graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1950 with a BA in Physical Education and teaching minors in History, English, Science and Music. She taught physical education, history and English at the junior and senior high level in Spirit Lake, Iowa, Waterloo, Iowa, and Bear Creek in Jefferson County, Colorado.

She met her husband Joseph (Joe) W. Miller on a blind date in 1957 and the couple married in Louisville, CO, on March 30, 1958. Dorothy and Joe had two children, Alison Jennings Miller Presley born in 1959, and Joseph Jennings Miller, born in 1961.

Dorothy and Joe lived in Wheatridge, and Louisville, CO, where Dorothy helped to establish a recreational program for girls and later assisted in establishing a city recreational park. Dorothy and Joe moved to Cheyenne, WY in 1966 where she was active in XJWC, a woman’s club, which was involved in many civic activities. She taught exercise classes at the YMCA, and participated in the Cheyenne Symphony Chorus, Little Theater and Cheyenne Frontier Days. She worked part time with the school district tutoring special education students.

In 1975, the couple moved to Dallas, Texas, following Joe’s career as a banker and later a manager for EDS. In Dallas, Dorothy worked for Dillard’s for nine years. Her many activities included singing in the Brookhaven Community Chorus, a group which performed throughout the Dallas area, and toured Europe twice.
