Rock Rapids, Iowa - Lewis D. Vogel, age 95, of Rock Rapids, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the Sanford Rock Rapids Hospital in Rock Rapids.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2016 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, with Reverend Mark Hanson officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 11th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.

Lewis Dwight Vogel was born on October 25, 1920 in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of Henry E. and Emilie (Schumann) Vogel. He grew up and attended school in Rock Rapids and graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1938. He attended South Dakota State College and received an Aero Technology Certificate.

On October 17, 1942, he was united in marriage to Gladys Wienk in Santa Monica, CA. Lewis worked as an aviation mechanic and progressed to a senior inspector at Douglas Air Craft in California. The couple moved back to Rock Rapids, Iowa, in 1945 where took over the family farm. During this time he also did Aviation Inspections in the surrounding area. He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids. His hobbies included anything to do with airplanes and aviation.

Lewis is survived by his children: Alan (Mary Anne) Vogel of Sutherland, IA, Linda (Tony) Brinkhous of Doon, IA and Roger Vogel of Sheldon, IA; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two siblings, Doris Busch of Phoenix, AZ and Morris (Dee) Vogel of Minneapolis, MN; and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Emilie Vogel; loving wife of nearly 70 years, Gladys Vogel; a grandson, Craig Vogel; and a brother, Albert Vogel.
