Alvord, Iowa - Elaine Catherine Hodgson, age 77 of Alvord, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

A memorial mass will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 5th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Larchwood.

The family wishes to inform the public, there will be a gathering following the memorial service, from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall, and all are invited.

Elaine Catherine Hodgson was born November 28, 1938 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Michael and Helen (Onuszko) Kozura. She grew up in Minersville, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Nativity of The Blessed Virgin Mary High School in 1956. She continued her education at Millersville State Teacher’s College and received her teacher’s certificate in 1960. She moved to California were she taught in the L.A. County area.

Elaine was united in marriage to Robert Milton Hodgson on February 8, 1964 at Minersville, Pennsylvania. Together they moved to Alvord, Iowa, where she taught for many years at West Lyon Community School. The Hodgson’s adopted two children, Marla Rebecca in 1968 and Edward “Ned” Kendall in 1969. Roberta Melinda was born to them in 1975.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alvord, active as a Eucharistic Minister and Lecture. After Sacred Heart Church closed she became a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Larchwood. She enjoyed reading, bridge club, flower gardening, and collecting McCoy Pottery. She also enjoyed lunch dates at the casino with friends. She was an active supporter of West Lyon School activities. Elaine and Dr. Bob were inducted in the West Lyon Hall of Fame in 1993, and received the Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1997. Also she was very active with the Lyon County Fair Board Association for many years.

She is survived by her children, Marla Doherty and her husband, John of Larchwood, Iowa; Ned Hodgson of Larchwood, Iowa and Roberta Hodgson of Alvord, Iowa; nephew, Michael Kozura; great-niece, Rosemary Cyan Kozura, both of Ypsilanti, Michigan; many other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Helen Kozura; her husband of 51 years, Dr. Robert M. Hodgson; a brother, Michael Kozura Jr.; and sister, Gloria Ann Hensley.

Elaine’s body is currently at the USD Medical Center for research.
