Gladys Drewes, 81, of Rock Rapids died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services were Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Rapids, with interment in Riverview Cemetery.

Gladys Harder was born Nov. 28, 1922, in Moody County, S.D., the daughter of Oscar "Bill" and Helen (Kramer) Harder. When she was 8, the family moved to Rock Rapids. She graduated from Wilson High School in Rock Rapids in 1940. Throughout high school and until 1942, she worked as a clerk at local food markets. From July 1942-December 1943, she worked for the Officer Procurement Service in Washington, D.C. From March 1943-June 1955, she was employed by the Farm Bureau Extension Service in Rock Rapids.

On Sept. 4, 1954, she married Claus Drewes. They resided east of Rock Rapids until 1959 when they moved into Rock Rapids. In 1960, she became part-time secretary at Immanuel Lutheran Church. In 1971, the family assumed custodial duties at the church. She continued as secretary until November 1987.

Her husband died June 8, 1996. She retired in April 2000.

Survivors include two sons, George of Rock Rapids and David of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Glenda Drewes, and one brother, Dale.
