DIED IN LYON COUNTY

February 10, 1925 - August 28, 2015

Rock Valley, Iowa -- Edna Van Abbema, 90, of Rock Valley died Friday, August 28, 2015 at Fellowship Village in Inwood, Iowa. Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 4, 2015 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley with Rev. Garry Nyenhuis officiating. A private family burial will be held prior to the memorial service at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 3, 2015 at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley. Edna was born February 10, 1925 near Carmel, Iowa, the daughter of William and Cornelia “Kay” (Hulshof) Feekes. She attended school through the 8th grade. On June 1, 1945, Edna married John Meendering in Carmel, Iowa. Together they farmed near Rock Valley. Edna continued to farm for four years following John’s death on July 1, 1967. Edna later married Sam Van Abbema on July 15, 1971. Together, they owned and managed Hillside Trailer Court in Rock Valley. Sam died March 19, 1989 and she continued to manage Hillside Trailer Court until 2010.

Edna served on the Sioux County Board of Aging and Senior Center board. She was active at church serving as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, and participated in numerous ladies circles. Edna always kept her hands busy by quilting, crocheting, and needlepoint but her greatest enjoyment came from her flower gardens.

Edna is survived by her four sons, Bill (Paula) Meendering of San Jose, CA, Gerald Meendering of Pierre, SD, Larry (Deb) Meendering of Piedmont, SD, and Randy (Sue) Meendering of Huron, SD; one daughter, Dee (Jim) Denekas of Pickstown, SD; sister, Mina Mouw of Sioux Center, IA; brother-in-law, Pete Moerman of Rock Valley; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and stepson, Jim Van Abbema of Bronx, NY.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, John Meendering and Sam Van Abbema; brothers, John and Ted Feekes; sisters, Catherine Moerman and Nellie Van Der Vliet; and stepson, David Van Abbema.
