Rock Rapids, Iowa -- Bernice (Huisman) Walters, age 85 of Rock Rapids died Friday, September 4, 2015 at Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rock Rapids.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 8th at Bethel Reformed Church of rural Little Rock with Pastor Matt Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Reformed Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, September 7th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

Bernice Phyllis Huisman was born January 15, 1930 at the family farm in Lyon County, Iowa, the daughter of Klaus W. and Anna (Eeten) Huisman. She grew up on a farm and attended country school near Ellsworth, Minnesota. She continued her education at Ellsworth High School. She worked as a caretaker for the Richard and Gertrude Schrick family for several years.

On August 28, 1959 she married Henry “Hank” Walters at the Bethel Reformed Church near Little Rock, Iowa. She began working at Red Owl Grocery Store in Rock Rapids until relocating to Worthington, Minnesota. She then worked at Campbell’s Soup for 28 years. After retirement she moved back to Rock Rapids.

She was a lifelong member of Bethel Reformed Church near Little Rock, active with various church activities. She enjoyed camping, fishing, playing cards, and traveling with family.

She is survived by two sisters, Anita (Virgil) Wiertzema of Worthington, Minnesota, and Lorraine (Arnold) Baron of Visalia, California; one brother, Gerald (Karen) Huisman of Ellsworth, Minnesota; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Clifford (Shirley) Huisman, Mrs. Arthur (Shirley) Huisman and Mrs. Russel (Judy) Huisman; and several nieces and nephews; and other extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Klaus and Anna Huisman; two sisters, Pearl Huisman and Gladys Fiihr; and six brothers, George Huisman, Weert Huisman, Fred Huisman, Arthur Huisman, Clifford Huisman and Russel Huisman; brother-in-law, Leo Fiihr; sisters-in-law, Margaret Huisman and Elsie Huisman.
