Peter “Pete” B. Kooi, 80, of Inwood, Iowa, died Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Inwood Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Sam Krikke officiating.

Private family burial will be held prior at Richland Cemetery at Inwood. Visitation, with family present, will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Inwood Christian Reformed Church from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

OBITUARY--

Following a brief illness, God graciously called home Peter B. “Pete” Kooi, 80, of Inwood, Iowa, on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the Inwood Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Sam Krikke officiating. A committal service will be held prior to the service at Inwood’s Richland Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, April 21 at the Inwood CRC, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Pete was born to John and Gertrude (Vander Lugt) Kooi near Hawarden, Iowa on April 7, 1935. He was united in marriage to Nella Pap on October 14, 1955 in Doon, Iowa. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. After proudly serving as a member of the United States Army, he had a long career as a rural route mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. Additionally, Pete served as a volunteer firefighter, Canton-Inwood Hospital board member, school board member at Inwood Christian School and an elder at the Inwood CRC. After retiring, he and Nella enjoyed wintering in Texas.

Pete is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Nella Kooi of Inwood; four children: Veryl (Connie) Kooi of Lynden, Washington, (children: Naomi, Nathan, Jason, Alex); Denise (Jans) Pops of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (children: Matthew, Sarah, Ian, Aaron, Hannah, Katia, Rebekah, Victoria, Josiah, Annelies); Terry (Julie) Kooi of Verona, Missouri, (children: Nikolaas, Meia, Joseph, and Anika); and Brent Kooi of Osaka, Japan, as well as eleven great-grandchildren.

Four surviving siblings include Grace Harthoorn of Rock Valley, Iowa; Randall Kooi of Edgerton, MN; Bill (Gert) Kooi of Orange City, Iowa; and Elmer (Karen) Kooi of Sioux Center, Iowa. Additional survivors include several brothers and sisters-in-law and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Dreaka Van Ballegooyen.
