Donald Ver Hoeven

March 30, 1920 - February 13, 2015

Inwood, Iowa - Don Ver Hoeven, 94, of Inwood died peacefully Friday, February 13, 2015 at Fellowship Village in Inwood. Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at First Reformed Church in Inwood with Rev. Rob Horstman officiating. Burial will be held prior to the memorial service. Visitation with the family present will be held Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home in Inwood. Donald John Ver Hoeven was born March 30, 1920 to Jacob and Klasina (De Koning) Ver Hoeven. Don was raised in the Ireton area with his brother and sisters, Loucella, Dorathy, Clarence, Tony, and Marvin. In November of 1942, Don left to serve our country during World War II. He served in the European Theater until the war ended in 1945.

Don married Marie De Groot on January 24, 1946 at Marie’s family home near Ireton, Iowa. Together they farmed first by Ireton then Brookings, South Dakota until returning to Iowa in 1963 to the farm place northeast of Inwood, where they raised their five children, Janice, Sharon, Lyle, Marlene, and Darwin. Don was a very active dairy farmer until his retirement.

Marie passed away on October 22, 2004. Don continued to live on the farm and enjoyed raising miniature horses and exotic birds, lending a hand with the remodel of the Inwood Community Center and any little jobs needing to be done on the farm. In March 2014, Don moved to Fellowship Village where he enjoyed watching the construction of the new addition and the kids playing outside for recess.

Don is survived by his children, Janice Ver Hoeven of Inwood, Sharon and Dennis De Kruyf of Sioux Center, and Lyle Ver Hoeven, Marlene “Marty” Niemeyer and her fiancé Paul Antoine and Darwin Ver Hoeven all of Inwood; even grandchildren, Brad and Laura De Kruyf, Lisa and Chris Schueler, Nathan and Amber Ver Hoeven, Justin and Dawn Ver Hoeven, Todd and Martina Niemeyer, Sheri and James Abbott, and Jeris Niemeyer; 12 great-grandchildren, Daniel De Kruyf, Caden and Paige Schueler, Jack, Olivia, Alyssa, and Kaden Ver Hoeven, Audriana, Evan, Lillian, and Brielle Niemeyer, and Johnna Abbott; and four sisters-in-law, Sadie Ver Hoeven, Helen Ver Hoeven, Dorothy Olson, and Priscilla Lockhorst.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marie; son-in-law, Bernie Niemeyer; parents; siblings, Louella and Gerrit Barents, Dorathy and Bill Koopmans, and Clarence, Anthony, and Marvin Ver Hoeven; in-laws, Reuben and Bernice De Groot and Pete Lockhorst.
