George, Iowa - Harvey Hilbrands, age 83 of George, died Friday, December 12, 2014, surrounded by family, at his home in George.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Hope Reformed Church in George, IA with Rev. David Poppen officiating. Burial will take place prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, December 15 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hope Reformed Church of George.

Harvey Hilbrands was born on July 1, 1931 at George, Iowa, the son of Fred and Tena (Gronewold) Hilbrands. He was raised on a farm, and attended country school through the 8th grade. He was drafted into the United States Marines in 1951 and served his country during the Korean War being honorably discharged in December 1953.

Harvey was united in marriage to Hilda Snuttjer on August 12, 1952 at Hope Reformed Church. They lived in Fall Brook, California until December 1953.

They moved back to Iowa to farm near George where they were blessed with eight children. Harvey farmed for 37 years. He also worked for the Lyon County Maintenance Department for 24 years and was a seed corn salesman. In 1990 Harvey and Hilda moved into town. He was a lifelong member of Hope Reformed Church serving as Deacon and Elder. His strong faith and service to the Lord was an important part of his life. He was also a 52 year member of the American Legion.

Harvey’s family was the center of his life. Having his family home for holidays and special events brought so much joy to his life. He loved attending the activities of his children and grandchildren. His family will remember him as a competitive card player, his love for Allis Chalmers tractors, and for his two-hand wave.

Harvey is survived by his wife of 62 years Hilda Hilbrands; eight children, Alan (Ina Faye) Hilbrands of George, Iowa; Linda (Lance) Grave of Spencer, Iowa; Donna (Glen) Geerdes of George, Iowa; Dennis (Marsha) Hilbrands of George, Iowa; Marcella (Jerry) Groen of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Sherry (Doug) Harms of Aurelia, Iowa; Dean (Becky) Hilbrands of Remsen, Iowa, and Vicki (Jeff) Lake of Sebeka, Minnesota. He is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren: Heath Hilbrands, Stefanie O’Leary, Kelli Kruger, Katie Anderson, Kim Franzen, Dana Longlee,Kelsie, Grave, Reid Geerdes, Lindsey Brouillette, Jessica Groen, Jenna Harms, Dylan Harms, Casey Groen, Tanner Hilbrands, Reghan Harms, Trenton Hilbrands, Madison Lake, Maya Lake, Ellie Hilbrands, Maci Lake, Max Lake and 9 great-grandchildren: Taylor Hilbrands, Alyssa Hilbrands, Peyton Franzen, Claire Kruger, Vaeda Franzen, Emma Longlee, Sutton Franzen, Skyla O’Leary, Camden Kruger and one adopted exchange granddaughter Katrin Gelhar; brother Stanley (Erma) Hilbrands, Luverne, Minnesota; sister Vera (Bert) Teunissen of Zeeland, Michigan; sister-in-law Lucille Smit Hull, Iowa.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Tena Hilbrands; brothers Abe and Alfred Hilbrands; sister Jennie Ten Braak.
