Life Legacy--

Hawarden, Iowa - Jo Ann Karssen, 81, of Hawarden, Iowa died Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at the Morningside Manor in Alcester, South Dakota. Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m., Monday, October 13, 2014 at the Hawarden Community Church with Rev. Derek Vande Slunt officiating. Burial will follow at the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation with the family will be 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sunday, October 12, 2014 followed by a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. all at the Hawarden Community Church. Jo Ann was born October 15, 1932 in Rock Rapids, Iowa, to Joseph and Ida (Fischer) Eben. She graduated from the Rock Rapids High School. On April 28, 1951, Jo Ann married Evert J. Karssen in Luverne, Minnesota. Jo Ann traveled with Evert while he was in the service. They eventually made their home in Hawarden, Iowa. Jo Ann worked as a store clerk at Coast to Coast. Jo Ann enjoyed camping, playing cards, and watching westerns. She was a lifelong member of the Hawarden Community Church.

Jo Ann is survived by her daughter, Sandy (Earl) Buffington of Hawarden; three grandchildren, Matthew Buffington of Hawarden, Jessica (Nathan) Van Oort of Rock Valley, Iowa, and Sarah Buffington of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; brother, Ken (Sandy) Eben of Sibley, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Bernard (Carol) Karssen of Springfield, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Evert; infant son, Kevin; and infant daughter, Julie.
