Larchwood, Iowa - Paul Snyders, age 89, of Larchwood, died Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, April 8th at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, with Father Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will follow at the Larchwood Cemetery in Larchwood.

Visitation will be Monday, April 7th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood. Also there will be a Vigil service held at 7:00 PM Monday evening at the church.

Paul Anthony Snyders was born September 30, 1924 in Larchwood, Iowa, to Frank and Nellie (Janssen) Snyders. He was raised in Larchwood and received his education from St. Mary’s Catholic School graduating in 1942. Paul entered the United States Navy in December of 1943. He was first stationed at the USNTC Farragut Naval base in Idaho before transferring to DDTC Tiburon, Calif., for further training. His permanent post of duty was in the South Pacific on board the USS AB South Dakota as a Gunners Mate 2nd Class. Paul’s ship was a floating dry dock; a vessel which could come underneath another ship and lift that ship out of the water in order to perform maintenance.

He was honorably discharged from the service in June of 1946. On February 28, 1949 he was united in marriage to Joan Teresa Krier in Larchwood where they started their family. Paul drove a bulk truck for Grotewold Motors delivering oil. He later worked for John Morrells as a city truck driver delivering meat to area grocery stores. He retired from Morrells in 1986.

He was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Larchwood. Paul loved the outdoors enjoying golf, hunting, trap shooting and later in life snow skiing. He also enjoyed walking for his health and just for the joy of being outdoors. He was a member of the Flessner Post No. 561 American Legion for 67 years. Paul will be remembered as a happy man who enjoyed his family and friends very much. This past Saturday, April 5, 2014 Paul passed away at the Rock Rapids Health Centre at the age of 89. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by daughter-in-law, Elaine Snyders of Larchwood; daughter, Beverly Eckholt of Savanna, Georgia; son, Ronald Snyders of Sioux Falls, S. Dakota; son, Gary Snyders of Larchwood, Iowa; son, Lyle Snyders and (Rasamy) of Larchwood; son, Tony (Lisa) Snyders of Larchwood; daughter, Cindy (Terry) Gunderson of Valley Springs, S. Dakota; son, Dean (Karen) Snyders of Larchwood; son, Jeff (Patti) Snyders of Rifle, Colorado; daughter, Janet (Victor) Myrlie of Lester, Iowa; daughter, Cathy Schlotfeldt of Johnston, Iowa; 34 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; sisters, Rita Cain of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Julie Roemen of Inwood, Iowa, Monica Weber of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Irene Daniels of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; brother, Matt Snyder of Aberdeen, South Dakota; nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joan Teresa Snyders; sons, David and Paul Jr.; grandson, Alec Schlotfeldt; brothers, Joe and Francis; sisters, Mary Kramer Honrath, and Helen Dains.
