Berend "Ben" Boon, 77, of Rock Rapids died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Rock Rapids Health Centre.

Services were Friday at Christian Reformed Church, Rock Rapids, with interment in Riverview Cemetery.

Mr. Boon was born Oct. 8, 1926, near Doon, the son of Marinus and Hendrika "Hattie" (Van Bemmel) Boon. He grew up in the Doon and Rock Valley areas, receiving his education at a Christian school in Rock Valley. He served in the army during World War II.

On Nov. 14, 1951, he married Hermina Kempema at Luverne, Minn. They lived near Rock Valley until 1955 when they moved to Rock Rapids. He worked as a mechanic for a local car dealership a few years. He then worked as an installer and repairman of appliances and furnaces at Modern Home Store in Rock Rapids over 20 years. He worked as a secondary road maintenance equipment operator for Lyon County 17 years, retiring in 1990. He became a resident of Rock Rapids Health Centre a week and a half before his death.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Wendell of Sioux City; one daughter, Barbara Boon of Sheldon; three grandchildren; four brothers, Andrew, Elmer and John, all of Rock Valley, and Marvin of Hull, and five sisters, Mrs. Herm (Mary) Steensma of Byron Center, Mich., Gert Van Engen, Mrs. Bernard (Martha) DeJager and Mrs. Dale (Hilda) Vink, all of Rock Valley, and Mrs. Virg (Joan) Horstman of Hull.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Martin, and two sisters, Henrietta Nibbelink and Grace Van Hofwegen.
