Dorothy Mae, daughter of Jake and Dora (Heemstra) Porter, was born July 21, 1919 on a rented Baldrens farm between Orange City and Owens, Iowa. Rose, John, and Stan were older, Al, Alice, and Adrian were younger. Rose's twin Dorothy died soon after birth, and a second Dorothy died after pulling a pan of hot water off the stove. As a third Dorothy, some lady told her "that was a bad omen" and Dorothy said, "here I am, almost 90!" Jake and Dora raised corn, oats, barley, and had milk cows, hogs, and chickens. Dorothy walked 1 1/2 miles to her country school and helped collect eggs and would make the supper while Dora milked the cows. Dorothy and her best friend Gwen Bough (who lived on the other side of the section) went to school and called each other on the phone.

Dorothy was in the 6th grade in 1929 when the Porter family moved to a farm 1/2 mile north and 1/2 mile east of Inwood. She walked to Inwood School in town, getting a ride only when the weather was bad. On the first day of school, Virginia Perrin met Dorothy at the door and was wearing a hat like a pilot"s cap with a buckle under her chin and said, "I'll show you where to go." In high school, Dorothy played guard in three court basketball, sang second soprano in the Glee Club and Girls Sextet. In her senior year she lived in town at Rev. Tinklenburg's parsonage at 202 East Jefferson (the future Moen home). Dorothy obtained her Teacher"s certificate at Cedar Falls, Iowa and taught 8th grade at Melvin, Iowa for 3 years and 6th grade at Sibley, Iowa for 2 years. Dorothy married Herman Moen on June 14, 1946 at Inwood where Dorothy continued to teach for many years. Herman died February 7, 1993. Dorothy was also a member of Inwood Library Board; Lyon County Historical Society; President of Inwood's American Legion Auxiliary; volunteer at Fellowship Village; active in Bethlehem Lutheran Church; and on the planning committee of building the West Lyon School. Dorothy died Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Fellowship Village.

Surviving family are her children, Cynthia (Pablo) Nogueras of Augusta, Georgia, Dan (Pam) Moen of Inwood; Rebecca (Jim) Nitzschke of Bettendorf, Iowa; sister, Alice Clark of Topeka, Kansas; grandchildren, Erik (Jessica) Moen, Adam (Alissa) Moen, Seth (Shannon) Moen, Capt. Cynthia (Eric) Johnston, Christian Nitzschke, Geoffrey Nitzschke, Stefan (Alexandra) Nitzschke, and Lauren Nitzschke; great-grandchildren, Jaidan, Kalin, Sadie Mae, Koby, and Josie.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Dora; sister, Rosa Duven; two infant Dorothy sisters; brothers, John, Stan, Al, and Adrian.
