Frances Margaret (DeGroot) Sterler – November 17, 1911 – June 30, 2005

"SHELDON, Iowa -- Frances Sterler, 93, of Sheldon passed away Thursday, June 30, 2005, at Lakeside Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Ashton, Iowa, with the Rev. Dale Lint officiating. Burial will be in Gilman Township Cemetery, Ashton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Frances Margaret Sterler, the daughter of Henry and Frances Margaret (Wentker) Degroot, was born Nov. 17, 1911, on a farm near George, Iowa. As a child, she moved with her parents to Ashton and then to Sheldon, where she attended Sheldon Middle School. Frances worked for her dad in the Ashton Hotel and baby-sat for a family.

On Dec. 12, 1928, she was united in marriage to John Sterler in Worthington, Minn. The young couple made their home on a farm west of Ashton before moving into Ashton in 1969. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, on Oct. 11, 1989, in Sheldon. Frances remained at home until moving into Sheldon and eventually into the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Ashton and the Ashton American Legion Ladies Auxilliary. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening and crossword puzzles. She was a good cook and always had the family gatherings for the holidays or for the grandchildren's birthdays.

Frances leaves to cherish her memory two daughters and their spouses, Madonna (Verrips) and Lawrence Feyerabend of Sanborn, Iowa, and Marilyn and John Rees of Okoboji, Iowa; three sons and their spouses, Roger and Joanne Sterler of Ashton, Ronald and Phyllis Sterler of Lake Park, Iowa, and Robert and Arlene Sterler of Sheldon; 21 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several step grandchildren and great-step grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews as well as many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her stepmother, Lola Degroot; two grandchildren, Ryan Ennema and Francine Verrips; a daughter-in-law, Dena (Haken) Sterler; a son-in-law, Arnold Verrips; two sisters; and a brother."
