Dietrich Edwin Knobloch – September 25, 1921 – September 10, 2008

Dietrich Knobloch, 86, of Brookings died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at United Retirement center in Brookings.

His service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at American Lutheran Church in De Smet with Randy Koeller officiating. Interment will follow in De Smet Cemetery.Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service to follow at Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet.

Dietrich Edwin Knobloch was born Sept. 25, 1921, at Alvord, Iowa, to Dietrich and Julia (Koch) Knobloch. He was raised on a farm and attended country school in Lester, Iowa.He served in the Army from June 16, 1942, to Nov. 30, 1945. He was a member of the American Legion for more than 50 years.

He married Doris Oihus Sept. 9, 1946. He worked on the railroad, farmed in Iowa and Arlington. In the early 1970s they moved to De Smet where he worked for Peavey Alfalfa Feeds until his retirement.

He enjoyed farming, gardening, fishing, hunting, patriotic holidays and John Deere memorabilia.

He is survived by six children: Joan (Garry) Thompson of Pierre, Bruce of Arlington, Carol of Seattle, Wash., Brenda Welch of Huron and John (Lauri) and Gretchen (Mike) Aspon, both of Brookings; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Lynch-Knobloch of Madison, Wis.; four sisters: Emma, Paulina, Wilma Hoogeveen of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Violet (Ray) Luthi of Lamar, Mo.; two brothers: Wilbert (Helen) of Lester, Iowa, and Adolph (Jean) of Algona, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: Helen of Larchwood, Iowa, and Vera of Lester, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; two sons: Leslie and Timothy; four sisters: Julia Plattner, Elizabeth Barker, Lydia Moser and Emily; four brothers: Ernst, Albert, Benjamin and Earl; three brothers-in-law: Albert Plattner, Edris Barker and Adolph Moser; and three sisters-in-law: Martha, Salome and Clara.
