Louisa Elizabeth Schmidt was born January 7, 1924 at Rock Rapids, Iowa, daughter of Herman and Gertrude (Waagmeester) Schmidt. The family moved to a farm near Larchwood. After graduating from the Larchwood High School, Louisa obtained her teaching certificate at Morningside College and began teaching second and third grades at Inwood. She married August Piersma on June 5, 1946. Together they lived at Inwood where Augie owned the Inwood Hatchery. Louisa was very dedicated to people and community being involved with Kiwanis Club, Women's Club, Pierians Club, Election Board, librarian of the Inwood Library, "Coffee Grounds" Club, volunteering at Veteran's Hospital at Sioux Falls, Fellowship Village Auxiliary, and Historical Society.

At Bethlehem Lutheran Church she had been active with the Choir, Woman's Circle, various boards, mentor to confirmation students, in Bible Study Groups, and help with the Interns. Louisa enjoyed many hobbies including flower and vegetable gardening (known for her raspberry jam); annually demonstrated making lefse at the Lyon County Fair; treasured many memories of fishing with Augie, her children and grandchildren; enjoyed sewing and quilting; collecting aprons and presenting her apron program to women's groups in the area; was an avid reader; and her greatest joy, was cooking meals with all of the trimmings for her family. Augie died on September 12, 1997.

She is survived by her daughter Virginia "Ginger" (Tom) Ketterman of Nevada, Missouri; sons: Roger (Judy) Piersma of Mason City, Iowa and Scott (Teresa) Piersma of Sioux City, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
