Obituary: Doon, IA: Mary Ann Aardema, 69, passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at Sioux Center Community Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Monday at Protestant Reformed Church, Doon. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Doon. Reverend David Overway will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday with the family present from 2-4 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley, IA. Memorials may be directed to NW Iowa Protestant Reformed School, Doon.

Mary Ann Mantel was born June 3, 1937 to Jacob and Henrietta (De Jong) Mantel near Hull, IA. Her family moved to Doon before they moved to California. Mary Ann returned to Doon and began working at First National Bank in Sioux Center, IA. Mary Ann was united in marriage to Don Aardema on June 1, 1967.

She worked part time at Den Hoed's Greenhouse for several years. Mary Ann also volunteered at the Northwest Iowa Protestant Reformed School in Doon. She was involved in various activities at the Protestant Reformed Church in Doon, including playing the organ, Ladies Circle and Martha's Society. Mary Ann enjoyed gardening, canning and especially spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Don of Doon, IA; son, Nathan (Tammy) Aardema of Sioux Center, IA; 2 daughters: Becky (Wayne) De Jong and Teresa Aardema all of Hull, IA; 2 grandchildren: Mariah and Cody Aardema; brother, Jake (Marty) Mantel of Redlands, CA; 3 sisters: Grace (Stan) Surma of Doon, Iona Reid of Starkville, MS and Lois (Tom) Elzinga of Zeeland, MI.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
