Eleanor Nagel, age 97 of Rock Rapids, Iowa died Thursday, September 13, 2012 at the Lyon Manor Nursing Home in Rock Rapids.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2012, at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids with Rev. Dan Kordahl, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids.

Eleanor Tilda Freda (Wilke) Nagel was born October 15, 1914 near Inwood, Iowa, the daughter of Lillie (Heyden) and Robert Wilke. She was baptized on December 6, 1914 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Alvord, Iowa. She attended country school and in 1932, she graduated from Inwood High School. She taught country school at Richland #8 Country School for two years before attending Schuyler’s Beauty School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, graduating in 1936. In October of 1937, she opened her first shop in Emery, South Dakota, and later sold her shop in 1942 to her assistant.

Eleanor was united in marriage to Harry C. Nagel on January 4, 1943 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. As a beautician she owned and operated Beauty Shops in Emery, South Dakota, Mitchell, South Dakota, and Larchwood, Iowa for a total of 60 years, retiring in 1999. Eleanor was a 30 year member of the National Hairdressers Association and was honored with a recognition pin. She also was a member of the English Lutheran Church in Larchwood since 1967.

She enjoyed her flowers and doing yard work. After Harry’s death in 1977, she continued to live and work in Larchwood. In 2003 she moved from her home to an apartment in Larchwood and later became a resident of Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehab in Rock Rapids where she died this past Thursday afternoon at the age of ninety-seven.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Knobloch of Larchwood, Iowa and brother, Wayne (Beverly) Wilke of Lester, Iowa; along with several nieces, nephews and friends.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Lillie and Robert; husband, Harry; sisters, Marcella Hoffencamp, Amanda Woodley and Vera Von Der Lieth.
