Obituary: Sioux Falls, SD: Joel Niemeyer, 49, died in his sleep at home in Sioux Falls, Tuesday January 10, 2012. Funeral Service 1:30 pm Saturday at Inwood Community Center, Inwood, IA. Burial at Richland Cemetery, Inwood. Rev. Rob Horstman officiating. Visitation with family 6-8 pm Friday at Porter Funeral Home 102 S. Main St, Inwood.

Joel was born August 27, 1962 at Canton, SD, son of Henry and Elsie (Hoefakker) Niemeyer. He attended West Lyon School and enlisted in the Army National Guard. After basic training, he began farming with his Dad until sustaining a spinal cord injury on May 30, 1981.

Following rehab from the accident, he was employed by R & R Conversions, Prairie Freedom Center, and until recently was Executive Director of North Central Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Joel was a positive influence for the disabled community with his passion in life to better the lives of individuals with disabilities. He was active on community Boards and Councils, and participated in a variety of recreational activities. An advocate for changes for better accessibility for all, he lived his life in a way that made a difference, challenging everyone from Sioux Falls to Pierre to Washington DC to live up to their potential.

Survivors are his mother, Elsie of Inwood; sisters, Wilma (Lee) Engstrom of Grand Rapids, MN, Sue (Mark) Bauman of Inwood; sister-in-law, Sharon Niemeyer of Inwood; 8 nieces and nephews; special friends, Lon and Sandy Hird, Debbie Paeth, Karla Kalb.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Gerrit and Johanna Niemeyer, and Henry and Minnie Hoefakker; father, Henry G. Niemeyer; brother, Case Niemeyer.
