Crystal Howard, 93, of Mitchell, S. D. died Friday, April 30, 2010, at Firesteel Healthcare Center.

Services were Saturday, May 8, at Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell, with interment in Graceland Cemetery.

Crystal Hemness was born October 5, 1916, near Inwood, the daughter of Cernie and Eva (Thompson) Hemness. She grew up near Inwood and graduated from Inwood High School. She attended beauty school and began a 61-year career as a beauty operator, working from 1934-1995.

She married Gerald Howard. They lived in Canton and Brooten, Minnesota, before moving to Mitchell in 1958.

Survivors include one son, Gary of Oliver, British Columbia; two grandchildren and two sisters, Leota Madland and Mrs. Dick (Eleanor) Schemmel, both of Inwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Glenn.
