Viola Hildegard (Dengler) Berg was born March 7, 1912 in Sioux City, Iowa the daughter of William and Cecelia (Laackmann) Dengler. She grew up near Rock Rapids, Iowa where she attended country school. On August 1, 1931 Viola was united in marriage to Adolph Berg at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids. Following their marriage Viola and Adolph farmed west of Rock Rapids and for sixty-two years they lived together on the same farm. Viola and Adolph were blessed with a long marriage and were able to celebrate and host their 40th, 50th and 60th Wedding Anniversaries with large family reunions. On May 18, 1994 Adolph died and following his death Viola continued living on the farm. During her life Viola was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and did much sewing of quilts for the mission projects. At home she crocheted and sewed and often gave these items to her children and grandchildren. Viola's family fondly remembers her dedication and hard work tending the chickens on the farm and especially how she cared for the eggs. Viola took orders and sold eggs to many people and would carefully wash, weigh and carton the eggs so everyone received her very best. Holidays were also a special time for Viola and her family. At Thanksgiving and Christmas the entire family would gather at Viola's and she would prepare a special meal of roast duck with all the trimmings, including her famous cookies. In spite of her advancing years Viola enjoyed living in her own home and was able to do so with the help of her son Harlan and his wife Hazel. Last Thursday, Feb. 3rd, Viola became ill at home and was taken to the Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids. While in the hospital she suffered an apparent heart attack and died at the age of eighty-seven.
Surviving are three children and their spouses, Harlan and Hazel Berg of Rock Rapids; Marlene and Wayne Camilli of Owatonna, MN; Carolyn and Daryl Bauer of Sioux Falls and a daughter-in-law, Delores Berg of Rock Rapids. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren along with a sister-in-law, Nellie Berg of Rock Rapids.
Preceding Viola in death were her parents; husband; son, Dwaine Berg; great-grandson, Nathan Smith; two sisters, Minnie Steen and Cecila Wacker and a brother, Otto Dengler.
