Tunis Overman, age 73 of Rock Rapids, IA died Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Rock Rapids Health Centre. Memorial services was held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, Jan. 26th at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with a private family committal service following at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids.

Tunis Overman was born March 3, 1936 at Carmel, IA, the son of Teunis and Fredrika (Voortman) Overman. The family moved to a farm south of Rock Rapids in 1942.
On August 5, 1955 he was united in marriage to Helen Boeve of Hull, IA. They lived in Doon, IA for a short time before moving to Rock Rapids where they lived together for 54 years.

Tunis worked at Wubbena Farms, Franken Garage, Glen D. Foltz & Son Construction, and was a self-employed installer of tile and floor coverings. He later started a contracting business to build and remodel homes and apartment buildings. Tunis retired in 2002, but stayed busy mowing at DGR through 2009.

Tunis enjoyed his children’s and grandchildren’s school and sporting events, bowling league for 35 years, golf, watching all sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings and Twins, crossword puzzles, computer games, playing cards and games with family and friends, traveling, and morning coffee with the “gang”. Tunis was a member of First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen Overman of Rock Rapids, IA; two sons, Terry (wife, Shelley) Overman of Gibson City, IL and Marlin (wife, Shelli) Overman of Rock Rapids, IA; five grandchildren, Justin (wife, Jessica) Overman of Sioux Falls, SD, Mark (wife, Angela) Overman of Oklahoma City, OK, Molly (fiance’ Chad) Overman of Gibson City, IL, Darin (fiance’ Kathryn) Overman of Perrysburg, OH and Sidney Overman of Gibson, City, IL; a great-grandchild, Jordyn Overman; step-great-grandchild, Kailyn Harris; a brother, Mike (wife, Jo) Overman of Sioux Center, IA; a sister, Dena Wildeman of Rock Rapids, IA; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Overman of Hull, IA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Teunis and Fredrika Overman; three sisters, Henrietta Franken, Rena Bleeker and Gert Spyksma; two brothers, Bill Overman and Ted Overman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital (MPCH) Association.
