Matthew McGuire, Sr., aged 83, was found dead in bed at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. J. Whalen, Wednesday morning. He had gone to bed at the usual time the night before. He awoke about 3 a. m. and had a drink of milk. When other members of the household arose at the usual time, they discovered he had passed away during the night.

Mr. McGuire was one of the pioneers of Sioux county, having come to Iowa from Highland, Wis., in 1871 and homesteaded near the present site of Perkins. He lived there until poor health compelled him to make his home with his daughter, with whom he had lived several years. He was married to Jane Wood, of Hull, Ia., who died in 1894, leaving twelve children, the youngest being a babe of 6 months.

The funeral was held at Larchwood Saturday. All members of the family were present with the exception of Mrs. Kate Kimball, Fingal, N. D. Those present from out-of~town included Mr. and Mrs. James McGuire and Mr. and Mrs. Matt McGuire, Canova, S. D.; Ed McGuire, Sioux City; Isaac McGuire, Lake Benton, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. H. Sullivan, Rockford, N. D.; Hans Fredrickson, Holland, Minn.; Mrs. Rose McKinster, Ledgerwood, N. D.; Mrs. H. Christensen, Holland, Minn.; Martin Buckley, Rock Valley, and Mr. and Mrs. Ferry Aurit, Rock Valley. Mr. McGuire was a gentleman of fine qualities and had a host of friends who join with the family in mourning his passing.
