John DeHaan died at his home on Greene street Friday morning, August 20, at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 20 days, after an illness of several years. About six years ago he suffered a stroke, and has not been so well since that time. On February 3 he suffered a severe stroke which left him an invalid. He was nursed by his wife until May 5th when she became ill of a nervous breakdown, and was taken to the hospital. He was then cared for by his daughter, Mrs. Agnes Cone, until his death.
Funeral services were held on Monday at 1:30 from the home, and were in charge of Rev. E. H. Mueller. A ladies quartet composed of Lucera Borman, Lorinda Langfeldt, Leona Mueller, and Loretta Olsen with Mrs. E. H. Mueller at the piano, sang several numbers. Burial was made in Riverview cemetery at the side of his wife.

John DeHaan was born January 30, 1857 at Hamswehrum, East Friesland, Germany. Here he received his secular and religious training. After serving in the army of his native country, he emigrated to America in 1882. The first five years in America he spent in Grundy county, Iowa. Here he was united in marriage to Hilke Garrels August 18,1887. Immediately after their marriage they came west to Lyon county in a lumber wagon, and settled on the prairie southeast of George. In 1899 they moved onto their own farm south of Rock Rapids. In 1913 they retired from farm life, and moved to George, returning to Rock Rapids in March 1926, where they have lived on Green street ever since.
He is survived by his five daughters, Mrs. Ella Meester, Mrs. Agnes Cone, Mrs. Helen Busch and Mrs. Elmer Williams, all of Rock Rapids, Mrs. Anna Harms of George, and brother in Germany, and nine grandchildren and other relatives, friends and neighbors. The only son, John, died in 1919. His wife passed away July 6, this year.
The Lockwood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
