Sarah Theresia Schmidt was born on December 21, 1866, at Waukeegan, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph Roth and Annie Lilli Roth. Her maiden name was Sarah Theresia Roth. Her father was a civil war veteran. When she was four years old, her parents left Illinois and came to Lyon County, Iowa. During the journey from Illinois, she witnessed the great Chicago fire, an event she could still talk about.

The family first settled in a sod house and then later moved in with the Fiihr family who had settled here previously. They lived with the Fiihrs until their own log cabin was built on their homestead.

On December 26, 1883 she was united in marriage to William Schmidt. To this union eleven children were born, and they all reached adulthood. Her husband and three children, Ellen, John and Anna (Mrs. Stern) preceded her in death. The surviving children are: Henry of Colchester, Illinois; William of Hadley, Minnesota; Myrtle (Mrs. Abbo Ubbinga) of Rock Rapids, Iowa; Alma (Mrs. David Galvin) of Curry, Minnesota; Frank, George, Harvey, and Lucy (Mrs. Tobe Lamfers) all of George, Iowa. She has one brother still living, Frank Roth of Spirit Lake, Iowa. Two sisters and three brothers preceded her in death.

When she was eighteen years old, she received Christian baptism. She gave testimony by mouth and by her life that she was a child of God. She was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, of George, Iowa, and a Charter member of the Women’s Society of World Service, which was then known as the Evangelical Missionary Society.

Mrs. Theresia Schmidt passed away at 6:45 p.m. on November 26, 1951, at the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 5 days. Besides her children she leaves to mourn her passing, 13 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
