Obituary:

Doon, Iowa - John P. Hoekstra, 86, died Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service was held Thursday at First Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley with burial be at Hillside Cemetery, Doon

John Hoekstra was born January 15, 1923 to Peter and Gertie (Van Bemmel) Hoekstra on the family farm near Hull, Iowa. He grew up three miles southeast of Doon, Iowa where he attended country school. John served his country in the U.S. Army from April, 1943 to December, 1945 during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

John was united in marriage to Lucille Gorter on November 18, 1948 in Doon, Iowa. He farmed all his life north of Doon, retiring in 1990 to Doon. John was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church, serving as an elder and deacon. He also served on the Christian School Board. John enjoyed going to the sale barn, hauling livestock and routinely helping his four sons.

John is survived by his wife, Lucille; 4 sons: Clifford (Linda) Hoekstra of Sioux Center, Iowa, Jerry (Arlis) Hoekstra of Doon, Iowa, Leonard (Deb) Hoekstra of Rock Valley, Iowa and Steven (Susan) Hoekstra of Doon, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold (Bertha) Hoekstra of Doon, Iowa; a sister, Marie Brummel of Hull, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Clarence Anema of Ireton, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Eileen Anema; brother-in-law, Ralph Brummel.
