Obituary: Inwood, Iowa: Norman Vande Vegte, 72, of Inwood, died Monday, March 02, 2009 at Sanford Canton-Inwood Hospital. Funeral Service will be 2 pm Wednesday at the Inwood Christian Reformed Church, Inwood. Burial at Richland Cemetery, Inwood.

Norman Junior Vande Vegte was born August 15, 1936 at home near Rock Valley, Iowa, son of Henry and Rolena (Driesen) Vande Vegte. In October of 1956, he left for Ft Carson, Colorado to serve in the U.S. Army. Norman spent time serving in Korea following the Korean War. He served until August of 1958 and on November 19th he married Geraldine Van’t Hul at Rock Valley. They lived on an acreage near Lebanon, Iowa from November, 1958 until March, 1959 while Norman worked for Roorda Machine Shop. Norman and Geraldine moved to a farm southwest of Inwood in March of 1959 where he started farming. In January of 1966, the couple moved to a farm southeast of Inwood. They farmed there until October, 1975 when they made their final move to the home place northeast of Inwood now occupied by Norman’s grandson, Matt and his wife Leah.

In the spring of 1991, Norman was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. They moved to town in November, 1994. But Norman continued on the farm working alongside his two oldest sons until he was no longer able to. Norman spent time at the farm until he moved into the Lyon County Manor in Rock Rapids in May 23, 2008 and then later the Fellowship Village in Inwood on July 23, 2008. Norman served as a Sunday School Teacher, on the Christian Reformed Church Council, Inwood Christian School Board, Hope Haven Board, Western Christian High School Board and the Lyon Rural Water Board.

Norman is survived by his wife Geraldine; 3 sons, Glenn (Julie) Vande Vegte, Galen (Julie) Vande Vegte, of Inwood, Gary (Amy) Vande Vegte of Orange City, IA; 12 grandchildren: Matthew (Leah), Jill, and Ryan (Katie) Vande Vegte, Kim (Brian) Nibbelink, Kelsey, Kenzie, Kayla, Loken, Micah, Cole, Blake and Amaya Vande Vegte; one great-grandson, Jason Vande Vegte; brother, John (Judy) Vande Vegte of Rock Valley, IA; sister, Helen (Arie) Byl of Sioux Center, Iowa; brother-in-law, Art (Anita) Van Ravenhorst of Lebanon, Iowa

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sisters: Mary Ann and Marilyn Mae Vande Vegte and another sister, Mary Ann Van Ravenhorst.
