Vera Von Der Lieth, 78, of Alvord died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Rock Rapids Health Centre.

Services were Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church, Alvord, with interment in the church cemetery.

Vera Wilke was born Sept. 18, 1924, near Inwood, the daughter of Robert and Lillie (Heyden) Wilke. She attended country school and graduated from Inwood High School in 1942. She started teaching country school when she was 17. She received her college degree by taking summer and night classes at Augustana, South Dakota State University and Northwestern College. Her teaching career spanned 48 years, including 35 years at West Lyon and two years as special reading and substitute teacher.
On May 21, 1943, she married Charles Von Der Lieth. They farmed for a while, then moved to Alvord.

Her husband died Aug. 20, 1983. She became a resident of Rock Rapids Health Centre two years ago.

She was active in Alvord American Legion Auxiliary and Teachers Association.

Survivors include one son, Robert of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two grandsons; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Wayne of Lester, and two sisters, Eleanor Nagel and Helen Knobloch, both of Larchwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters, Marcella Hoffenkamp and Amanda Woodley.
